Portraits of Temperament updates David Keirsey's thinking on the four basic personality types he first identified in his best-seller, Please Understand Me. In this his second book, Keirsey introduces the idea that the four temperaments are unique configurations, self-consistent patterns of personality which are fundamentally different from one another. To stress this Keirsey renames the four temperaments the Artisans, Guardians, Rationals, and Idealists, and shows how each is either concrete or abstract in thought and speech, and either cooperative or pragmatic in getting what they want. He then divides each temperament into two distinct sub-types, depending on their inclination to be directive or informative in dealing with others. The eight portraits of character which follow in the book comprise Keirsey's most thorough depiction of personality types up to that time.
